Join us for a fun-filled, hands-on exploration of a delicious and versatile flatbread from the borderlands of two European countries—known as Flammkuchen in Germany and Tarte Flambée in France. In this 4-hour workshop, you’ll work in pairs to craft two mouthwatering pies—one topped with bacon and leeks, and another with onions and mushrooms. You’ll learn the best ways to prepare these toppings and explore additional topping possibilities to inspire your future creations.
Under the guidance of instructor Katya Lyukum — who’s eager to share her personal travel stories from both Germany and France — you’ll discover how to make, handle, shape, and top your dough for an authentic Flammkuchen experience. A tour of Barton Springs Mill is also included, giving you the chance to learn about our heirloom organic flours, including the special blend of Butler’s Gold type 00 and whole wheat TAM 105 used for your dough. No baking experience is necessary; our workshop is designed for both curious beginners and seasoned cooks.
Throughout the class, you’ll pick up tips on dough management, delve into the history and culture behind these regional specialties, and bond with fellow food enthusiasts. If you’d like, feel free to bring a bottle of Riesling to enjoy with your freshly baked pies at the end of the session. We’ll provide take-home boxes for any leftovers, so you can share your handiwork (and newfound skills) once you’re home. As an added bonus, you’ll receive 15% off any flour purchased during the class, making it easy to continue baking at home with confidence.
Come break your routine, immerse yourself in culinary tradition, and enjoy a laid-back yet informative day at Barton Springs Mill!
NOTE: Bring a friend to partner with in class, or partner up with a new friend in class for this delicious experience! We will be asking participants to partner up when topping & firing their doughs, so we have time to make enough flatbread for all to enjoy.
Beginners are welcome, and encouraged to attend.
